Botched Install? Broken BMBF?

If you’re NOT having issues, and you’re just looking to upgrade, please skip this section.

If you’re here because your BMBF or Beat Saber is screwed up, partially installed, not working right — whatever — then you’ll want to follow these guides FIRST.

Once clean, return here for the complete setup and configuration.

Note: There are probably a dozen different ways to go about this task. I’m offering you the way that works for me and I’ll keep this article up to date with this methodology.

Getting Started

Whether you’re here to upgrade or install fresh, we’ll need to take care of a few requirements.

A. Sidequest

To make life easy, you should have a computer running on the same network as your Quest. You’ll need a PC for SideQuest anyway; just make sure it is on the same network as the Quest is.

You should already have SideQuest set up and working. We will not be covering any set up or configuration of SideQuest. If you need help, the official site’s Setup Page is THE place to go.

B. Beat Saber

Beat Saber should already be installed and working. Launch it once, just to make sure everything is fine; then exit. Be sure you have all your DLC downloaded and installed prior to modding.

C. Download Latest BMBF

You will need the latest BMBF .apk file from their website Look under Assets and download the APK file. You should always get the latest version, toward the top. The screen below is only a representation of what you might see.

D. Custom Songs Bookmarks

We’re going to use the “Bookmark Sync Method” of getting custom songs. There are other ways of doing it, but this is my recommendation. Go perform that tutorial first, then return here.

E. Backups (Optional)

You can back up several elements of Beat Saber and BMBF prior to performing an install or update. Note: the format of the data can change from version to version. A backup won’t necessarily guarantee full data restoration.

  • Beat Saber Game/Score Data (Guide)
  • Manually Backup Custom Songs (Guide)
  • Use Playlist Editor Pro to backup your Custom Playlists (App Site)

Summary:

  • You have the latest BMBF apk from the official download site
  • Beat Saber is installed and functional; your paid DLC is downloaded and installed
  • You have bookmarked some custom songs and you know your Beast Saber username
  • Performed any backups you feel are necessary
  • Disable any mods you have currently installed (Mapping Extensions, ScoreSaber, etc)
Beat Saber 1.12.x Upgrade From BMBF 1.11.x to 1.12.x

Make sure you have followed the Getting Started section above.

  • If you do not have BMBF installed at all, please skip this section down to Installing BMBF.
  • If you are running a version of BMBF prior to 1.8.0, skip this section down to Installing BMBF.
Update to BMBF 1.12.0

BMBF 1.12.0 supports Beat Saber v1.12.x (aka Multiplayer Edition). Multiplayer will no longer work once modded. (See Known Issues below) Use this section of the guide to make sure everything goes well.

A number of users have reported an Oculus warning asking to restore the patched Beat Saber – as it may be in violation of the Platform Abuse Policy. Click here to see an example of this screen. If you are prompted by Oculus, click CLOSE. Do not allow Oculus to restore Beat Saber.
  1. Follow the Getting Started guide above to ensure you are set up adequately and have the latest BMBF version.
  2. Be sure to close Beat Saber before continuing.
  3. If you want to save your scores, Beat Saber progress and data, perform a backup. Use guide: Backup/Restore Beat Saber Data
  4. Perform the section Installing BMBF with SideQuest below, then return here.
  5. Run BMBF (Use guide: Running BMBF)
  6. Put on your Quest. BMBF should be running. You cannot patch Beat Saber from a remote BMBF session – you MUST do it from within the headset.
  7. Select Tools then Uninstall BS. This will uninstall Beat Saber properly for you.
  8. Select Ok.
  9. You will be returned to the Oculus home screen.
  10. Wait a minute or two, the go to Not Installed apps. Sometimes it takes a minute for Oculus to realize the app is gone.
  11. Reinstall Beat Saber (which should bring you up to 1.12.2 (aka Multiplayer Edition)
  12. Run Beat Saber and make sure all your paid DLC content is there.
  13. Exit Beat Saber.
  14. Run BMBF (Use guide: Running BMBF)
  15. The First Run BMBF Wizard should run. Jump to that section below, then return here.
  16. Provided you were prompted for a RESTORE and it was successfully run, all your songs and playlists should be intact.

Note On The Restore Process:

The restore process can take several minutes. There is an indicator on the screen (could be at the bottom right or top right) showing progress. Wait until it is done; the SYNC TO BEAT SABER button will start flashing. Click it – and when it finishes … you are restored.

  1. Run Beat Saber and accept the request for permissions.

Note on Permissions

If you run Beat Saber the first time and you are not prompted for permissions (you get a black screen), exit Beat Saber and set the permissions manually. This can be done by hovering over the Beat Saber icon in your library and clicking the three dot menu – choosing Permissions then enabling Storage. See screen.

  1. Run Beat Saber and accept the request for permissions.
  2. Verify your songs are there.
  3. Exit Beat Saber.
  4. Perform a restoration of your Beat Saber data. Use guide: Backup/Restore Beat Saber Data
  5. Update your Mods; ScoreSaber needs 0.2.2 to function properly, for example.
This new BMBF requires all mod authors to update their mods.
Do NOT attempt to use any mods like ScoreSaber, PinkUtils, etc. unless they are specifically updated for this version of BS/BMBF. Watch the QuestBoard site for news about Mod updates.
Installing BMBF
Coming from BMBF 1.7 (or earlier)

You MUST manually Uninstall BMBF before continuing the install to 1.12.0

You MUST Uninstall Beat Saber Manually and reinstall Beat Saber before installing BMBF 1.12.0

Coming from BMBF 1.8.0 / 1.8.1/1.9/1.10.x

You should have followed the steps above under Beat Saber 1.12.1 Upgrade From BMBF 1.11.x to 1.12.x

You do NOT need to manually uninstall BMBF or Beat Saber before starting the tutorial. Beat Saber is uninstalled as part of the standard modding workflow.

If you have a botched Beat Saber that won’t start: Uninstall Beat Saber Manually and reinstall Beat Saber before installing BMBF 1.12.0

Installing BMBF with SideQuest

Note: If you are user of my Playlist Editor Pro app, there is an INSTALL BMBF button that will do this process a lot easier.

  1. Plug your Quest into your computer
  2. Run SideQuest on your computer— make sure it says CONNECTED on the top left of the window
  3. Click the 9 pip icon in the top bar of SideQuest
  1. Open Windows Explorer (or the file manager of your choice) and find the com.weloveoculus.bmbf.apk file you downloaded above.
  2. Drag the apk file from Windows Explorer to the SideQuest logo and release it.
  1. Check MY TASKS (it may not read that – follow the arrow icon on the screen below) to ensure BMBF installed (should be green).
  1. Run BMBF: Running BMBF
Note: Only perform steps 1-6 of Running BMBF then return here and move on to First Run BMBF Wizard.

Once BMBF is running, you no longer have to have your Quest attached to your PC. You can unplug it now if you like.
First Run BMBF Wizard

If you’re coming from BMBF 1.11.0 to 1.12.0 – there will be NO first run process. Skip to Final Steps below.

You should turn off Hand Tracking while performing this tutorial! You run the risk of accidentally clicking-off important pop-ups during the modding process.
A number of users have reported an Oculus warning asking to restore the patched Beat Saber – as it may be in violation of the Platform Abuse Policy. Click here to see an example of this screen. If you are prompted by Oculus, click CLOSE. Do not allow Oculus to restore Beat Saber.

The first time you access BMBF after installing, you’ll see the “wizard” start up, guiding you through the process.

  1. Put your Quest on — BMBF’s window should be there, ready for you.
  2. The first screen is an information screen. Simply click continue.
  3. Next, it will uninstall Beat Saber. This is required. Click Uninstall — If prompted, accept the uninstall option. If you have issues: Uninstall Beat Saber Manually
  4. The next step it to patch Beat Saber. Click Patch Beat Saber — This can take a bit; be patient.
  5. Next, it will install the newly patched copy of Beat Saber. Click Install — If prompted to allow BMBF perrmission to do so, accept the install option.
DO NOT HIT OPEN – HIT DONE.
  1. Once you hit DONE and not OPEN, you will see Beast Saber’s website appear. Since you already have some songs bookmarked, you don’t need to do anything.
  2. If you are asked to restore previous items (songs, etc) — go ahead and say yes. This process appears to have been fixed from previous versions. If not, you’ll want to resync your songs via bookmarks. We’ll cover that later.

Note On The Restore Process:

The restore process can take several minutes. There is an indicator on the screen (could be at the bottom right or top right) showing progress. Wait until it is done; the SYNC TO BEAT SABER button will start flashing. Click it – and when it finishes … you are restored.

Note:

From now on, once BMBF is running (run it anytime using this guide) you can access it via a browser on your PC with the address http://:50000. You can find your IP address by looking at the top left corner of your SideQuest window. You can’t use the web browser to do the install/first run of BMBF, but you can use it subsequently for Playlist management, etc.

Final Steps

The hard part is over.

  1. In your Quest, return to the main Oculus home screen, exiting BMBF.
  2. If you did not restore any custom songs or playlists in the previous section, you should follow this guide and bookmark some songs: Bookmark Syncing

NOTE: If SyncSaber is not working, open SideQuest, go to the Apps, click the gear next to BMBF and verify READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE and WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE is selected. See pic. On Quest 2, Sidequest may not accurately report the app state.
  3. If you peformed a backup, you should restore your Beat Saber data (scores, progress, etc) by using this tutorial: Backup/Restore Beat Saber Data
  4. If you were not prompted to restore your previous songs / playlists during the install wizard, check out this guide and use Playlist Editor Pro to restore your playlists.
  5. You should be able to turn back on any compatible mods at this time.
  6. Run Beat Saber.
  7. You will be asked for storage permission: Grant it.

If you boot Beat Saber and get a black screen – seeming to hang, manually set permissions by clicking the three dots while hovering over the Beat Saber icon in your library.
  8. Inside Beat Saber, go into SOLO and look at the options along the bottom. Along with your OST “albums” you’ll also see Custom Maps. Depending on your custom playlists, it will look something like this:

Known Issues

Here are important things you need to know about each version of BMBF. If you are having problems, checking this list against your version of BMBF can be helpful.

  • Multiplayer does not work; not for custom songs, not for OST songs.
  • The leaderboards for the OST songs continue to not work (ScoreSaber for custom songs will be coming later)
  • This new BMBF requires all mod authors to update their mods. Do not attempt to use any mods like ScoreSaber, PinkUtils, etc. unless they are specifically updated for this version of BS/BMBF.
  • Playlist icons sometimes don’t show properly for OST Playlist covers inside the BMBF browser
  • 3 playlists max are visible in the current interface. This is not an issue with BMBF, but rather a bug in the game (developers will likely fix this)
  • If accessing BMBF on your PC from your Quest 2, you must ensure that BMBF is currently open on your Quest 2 (visible in the headset)
  • Logging into Bsaber.com from within the BMBF browser doesn’t appear to be working. Use the Quest’s browser or use Bookmark syncing to remote install songs.
  • While not an issue with BMBF, it seems that a modified Beat Saber make constantly prompt users to restore the Store version – not just during install, but every time you run it. This is Oculus’ doing – not BMBF.
  • Logging into Bsaber.com from within the BMBF browser doesn’t appear to be working. Use the Quest’s browser or use Bookmark syncing to remote install songs.
